2020 Scout Celebration Plan

To all Scout Unit Leaders;

COVID-19 has turned our world upside down during 2020.  The Army Corps of Engineers for Barren River Lake as well as the Scout Celebration committee has monitored the situation closely from the beginning of the pandemic.  Even now, there are many uncertainties about group sizing and social distancing requirements.   At some points during the year it was unclear if we could host any type of event.  Due to time continuing to pass, we have decided to host Scout Celebration just a little differently this year.

Scout Celebration will not be held in a format we are accustomed to.  This year, the Army Corps of Engineers has graciously blocked off and opened Tailwater campground to Scouting units for a ‘free camping weekend.’  We strongly encourage packs and troops to come enjoy a weekend of camping as a way to say thank you for the work and service projects that scouting has contributed to the area.  The Scout Celebration committee will also be on-site camping with you, however, there will be no planned activities as in years past.  You, the leaders of the units, will need to plan ahead for any activities your unit will have during the weekend.  You can work on advancements or you may want to hike and explore.  If the beach is still open swimming could be an option for your unit.  Please follow the safety procedures for your unit as based from Girl Scouts of the USA or the Boy Scouts of America.   We will not have the cookoff, Jr. Olympics or Saturday evening campfire due to all social distancing requirements.  Sadly, this year, there will also be no Jigger awarded.

All planning that has been completed up to this point is now on hold and will be used next year.  The theme for the 2021 Scout Celebration will be “Let’s Play.”  For many of us, it has been a year since we have visited and talked with many of the leaders.  During this relaxing weekend we hope to spend time talking with unit leaders for ideas and insights for future Scout Celebration events.  In years past there was little time for committee members to socialize due to ensuring the next event will start on time.

The Army Corps of Engineers has requested that all units that will be attending still register through the Scout Celebration web site so that we can keep a running total of those in attendance.  The registration link is at www.scoutcelebration.org.

We hope to see you all there!
